Then Paul stood in the midst of Mars Hill，and said，Ye men of Athens！I perceive that in all things ye are too superstitious.For as I passed by，and beheld your devotions，I found an altar with this inscription，To THE UNKNOWN GOD.Whom therefore ye ignorantly worship，him declare I unto you.God that made the world and all things therein （seeing that he is Lord of heaven and earth）dwelleth not in temples made with hands；neither is worshiped with men's hands，as though he needed anything，seeing he giveth to all life，and breath，and all things；and hath made of one blood all nations of men for to dwell on all the face of the earth，and hath determined the times before appointed，and the bounds of their habitation；that they should seek the Lord，if haply they might feel after him，and find him，though he be not far from everyone of us: for in him we live，and move，and have our being；as certain also of your own poets have said，F(xiàn)or we are also his offspring.Forasmuch then as we are the offspring of God，we ought not to think that the Godhead is like unto gold，or silver，or stone，graven by art and man's device.And the times of this ignorance God winked at；but now commandeth all men everywhere to repent: because he hath appointed a day，in the which he will judge the world in righteousness by that Man whom he hath ordained；whereof he hath given assurance unto all men，in that he hath raised him from the dead.And when they heard of the resurrection of the dead，some mocked: and others said，We will hear thee again of this matter.So Paul departed from among them.Howbeit certain men clave unto him，and believed；among the which was Dionysius the Areopagite，and a woman named Damaris，and others with them.

保羅站在亞略巴古當中，說：“眾位雅典人啊，我看你們凡事都很敬畏鬼神。我路過時，看你們的祈禱，我遇見一座祭壇，上面的銘辭寫著：‘致未識之神’；我現(xiàn)在將那你們所不識卻敬拜的神告訴你們。那是創(chuàng)造宇宙和其中萬物的上帝。他既是天地的主，就不住人手所造的殿堂；他既能賜萬民以生命、呼吸、萬物，他就不用人手膜拜，好像他缺東少西。他從一支血脈造出萬族的人，遍居整個大地，并且預先限定他們的年壽和所住的疆界；并叫他們尋找神，或許能夠體認、找到。其實他就在我們每人周遭。我們因他而得以生活、動作、存留；就如你們的詩人所說，我們是他的苗裔。我們既是上帝的子嗣，就不應認為上帝的神性像人用技藝與心思雕刻的金、銀和石頭。世人蒙昧無知時，神曾默許；而今，卻命各處的人都要幡然悔改，因他已擇定日期，讓由他選定的人憑公義審判世界。為給眾人一個信據，上帝已讓他死而復生?！北娙寺牭剿蓝鴱蜕@話，有的譏誚保羅，有的則說：“我們愿意再聽你講這事。”于是，保羅從他們當中離開。但有幾個人跟隨他，信了主。這些人中有雅典最高法院的法官狄奧尼修斯和一個名叫達默里斯的婦人，還有其他人也同他們一起信從了主。
