身邊的教育

自從實施全民universal education^［1］以來，elementary education^［2］, secondary education^［3］, higher education^［4］以及后來興起的adult education^［5］都發(fā)生了巨大的變化。不管是public school^［6］還是private school^［7］，其辦學規(guī)模，辦學質(zhì)量有了很大的飛躍。人的一生需要不斷學習的特性決定了教育是一項經(jīng)久不衰的事業(yè)。從呱呱落地到進入nursery school^［8］, kindergarten^［9］，再到elementary school^［10］, junior high school^［11］, senior high school^［12］，我們都在接受最基本的，最重要的教育。

進入大學，我們便開始接受專業(yè)性的教育。通常有college of liberal arts^［13］, college of science^［14］, college of engineering^［15］, college of law^［16］, college of commerce^［17］, college of sociology^［18］, college of agriculture^［19］, medical college^［20］等各種類型的學校供我們選擇。

根據(jù)自己的興趣愛好，我們可以選擇自己喜歡的major^［21］去學習。如果你喜歡哲學，那么你可以選擇department of philosophy^［22］；如果你愛好literature^［23］，你可以選擇department of Chinese literature^［24］或department of English literature^［25］；如果你對媒體感興趣，你可以選擇department of journalism^［26］或department of mass communications^［27］；如果你喜歡邏輯推理，你可以選擇department of mathematics^［28］或department of physics^［29］；如果你喜歡工程建筑，你可以選擇department of electrical engineering^［30］或 department of mechanical engineering^［31］或department of civil engineering^［32］。

一般大學的period of schooling^［33］都為四年。課程設(shè)置都為basic course^［34］, specialized course^［35］, required course^［36］, selective courser^［37］。完成四年的學習后，需要參加畢業(yè)考試并撰寫畢業(yè)論文。通過這些graduation appraisal^［38］后，才可以在graduation ceremony^［39］上取得diploma^［40］和degree^［41］。
