第三節(jié)　長(zhǎng)難句的譯法

英語中在20個(gè)詞以上的句子一般都認(rèn)為是長(zhǎng)句，最長(zhǎng)的句子有的可達(dá)100多詞，甚至是200多詞。修飾語過多、并列成分多、語言結(jié)構(gòu)層次多是造成句子長(zhǎng)且難理解的主要原因。在翻譯長(zhǎng)句時(shí)，首先，不要因?yàn)榫渥犹L(zhǎng)而產(chǎn)生畏懼心理，因?yàn)?，無論是多么復(fù)雜的句子，它都是由一些基本的成分組成的。其次要弄清英語原文的句法結(jié)構(gòu)，找出整個(gè)句子的中心內(nèi)容及其各層意思，然后分析幾層意思之間的相互邏輯關(guān)系，再按照漢語的特點(diǎn)和表達(dá)方式，正確地譯出原文的意思，不必拘泥于原文的形式。此類句子翻譯通常采用順譯法、換序法、分譯法、綜合法。

●順譯法———表示在翻譯的過程中，按照源語言的順序進(jìn)行直接的組合和排列的方法。

●換序法———英語一般是先總提或先說個(gè)人感受，后面敘述事由或背景;在時(shí)間順序上先說最近發(fā)生的事，而后再說過去發(fā)生的事。漢語的敘述順序則相反。此外，英語的有些句型與漢語的順序也不同。所以英譯漢時(shí)，遇到這類情況都應(yīng)改變順序，這通常叫做改變順序法，即換序法。

●分譯法———英語長(zhǎng)句比較多，漢語句子一般比較短。為了符合漢語表達(dá)習(xí)慣，我們?？蓪⒂⒄Z長(zhǎng)句拆開來分譯，成為短句。

●綜合法———有些英語長(zhǎng)句順譯、換序或分譯都有困難，就應(yīng)該考慮打亂原文順序，分成若干小的語言單位，按照漢語的時(shí)間或邏輯順序重新組合句子。這種方法擺脫了原文語序和句子結(jié)構(gòu)的束縛，能使譯文流暢、自然、通順。

下面結(jié)合實(shí)例進(jìn)行分析說明。

分析:該句的骨干結(jié)構(gòu)為“It is realized that．．．”，it為形式主語，that引導(dǎo)主語從句以及并列的it is even possible to．．．結(jié)構(gòu)，其中，不定式作主語，the time．．．是“expectation of life”的同位語，進(jìn)一步解釋其含義，而time后面的句子是它的定語從句。

五個(gè)謂語結(jié)構(gòu)表達(dá)了四個(gè)層次的意義:

可是現(xiàn)在人們意識(shí)到;

其中有些礦物質(zhì)的蘊(yùn)藏量是有限的;

人們甚至還可以比較合理地估計(jì)出這些礦物質(zhì)“可望存在多少年”;

將這些已知礦源和儲(chǔ)量將消耗殆盡的時(shí)間。

根據(jù)同位語從句的翻譯方法，把第四層意義的表達(dá)作適當(dāng)?shù)恼{(diào)整，整個(gè)句子就翻譯為:

分析:句子的框架是By and large，the American diet continued to．．．，rather than on grains，which meant that．．．。關(guān)系代詞which引導(dǎo)非限制性定語從句，其先行詞是上文的一整句。在這個(gè)從句中又包含一個(gè)由that引導(dǎo)的名詞從句作meant的賓語。

by and large意為總之，總而言之。rather than意為而不是。此句譯為:

分析:第一句是復(fù)合句，包括一個(gè)主句和一個(gè)從句。該句的框架是The Seller shall notify the Buyer．．．whether his inspectors will join in．．．第二句雖然句子稍長(zhǎng)，但并不復(fù)雜，是個(gè)簡(jiǎn)單句，有兩層涵義，其框架是The Buyer receiving the notice shall inform the Seller of the date of．．．before the date of．．．a(chǎn)nd shall also render convenience to．．．譯文如下:

分析:該句由一個(gè)主句，一個(gè)條件狀語從句和一個(gè)賓語從句組成，“……變得越來越重要”是主句，也是全句的中心內(nèi)容，全句共有三個(gè)謂語結(jié)構(gòu)，包含三層含義:

……變得越來越重要;

如果要使學(xué)生充分利用他們的機(jī)會(huì);

得為他們提供大量更為詳盡的信息，作更多的指導(dǎo)。

為了使譯文符合漢語的表達(dá)習(xí)慣，我們可采用逆序法，翻譯成:

分析:在此長(zhǎng)句中，有一個(gè)插入語“it is often said”，三個(gè)并列的謂語結(jié)構(gòu)，還有一個(gè)定語從句，其中三個(gè)并列的謂語結(jié)構(gòu)盡管在結(jié)構(gòu)上屬于同一個(gè)句子，但都有獨(dú)立的意義，因此在翻譯時(shí)，可以采用分句法，按照漢語的習(xí)慣把整個(gè)句子分解成幾個(gè)獨(dú)立的分句，翻譯成:

分析:句子的框架是Article I of the GATT is．．．clause under which each member nation must give treatment．．．that is at least as favorable as that applied to．．．。介詞under+which引導(dǎo)的定語從句，修飾clause．在這個(gè)從句中又包含了由關(guān)系代詞that引導(dǎo)的定語從句，修飾treatment．先行詞treatment被短語to other member nation’s imports and exports隔開。第二個(gè)that是指示代詞，指代treatment．過去分詞短語applied to the most favored nation作定語，修飾that clause在此句中譯為條款?？梢宰g為:

分析:該句共有三層含義:A:人們不敢出門;B:盡管警察已接到命令，要做好準(zhǔn)備以應(yīng)付緊急情況;C:警察也和其他人一樣不知所措和無能為力。在這三層含義中，B表示讓步，C表示原因，而A則表示結(jié)果。按照漢語習(xí)慣順序，我們可將句子翻譯為:

分析:句子的框架是I believe that+賓語從句。賓語從句的主干是the most important forces behind the massive M＆A wave are the same;后面的that underlie the globalization process為定語從句修飾the most important forces;而“globalization process:”后面是對(duì)forces的具體解釋，包含了三個(gè)并列的成分，即三種力量:falling transportation and communication costs，lower trade and investment barri-ers和enlarged markets，其中that require enlarged operations為定語從句修飾enlarged markets，capable of meeting customers’demands為后置定語形容詞短語。

M＆A為mergers and acquisitions的縮寫，是經(jīng)濟(jì)術(shù)語，表示“合并和兼并”的意思;trade and investment barriers意為“貿(mào)易和投資壁壘”;globalization process指“全球化進(jìn)程”。此句可譯為:

分析:句子的框架是The risk of．．．a(chǎn)s well as the obligation to．．．passes from．．．to．．．when the seller has fulfilled．．．該句由一個(gè)主句和一個(gè)時(shí)間狀語從句組成，其中主句有兩個(gè)并列的主語成分，即The risk of loss of or damage to the goods和the obligation to bear the costs relating to the good，時(shí)間狀語從句的結(jié)構(gòu)簡(jiǎn)單明了，即the seller has fulfilled this obligation to．．．按照漢語習(xí)慣，可將其譯為:

分析:句子的主干是Much of the language makes it sound like precise sci ence．句中的used to describe monetary policy是過去分詞短語做后置定語修飾the language;“steering the economy to a soft landing”or“a touch on the brakes”是后置定語修飾the language.參考譯文:

分析:原本是獨(dú)立的兩個(gè)句子，前一句是that引導(dǎo)的賓語從句，后一句是一個(gè)省略了關(guān)系詞的定語從句。兩句話意思相關(guān)聯(lián)，可以將其譯為:

分析:句子的框架是We are glad to note．．．that，as．．．在that引導(dǎo)的賓語從句中插入了一個(gè)as引導(dǎo)的比較狀語。前一句與后一句意義關(guān)聯(lián)，可以將這兩句譯為:

分析:此句框架是regular shipper may take out．．．．其中which引導(dǎo)了一個(gè)定語從句，provided引導(dǎo)了一個(gè)狀語從句，此句可以譯為:
